Elephant Nose Fish / 象鼻鱼

The Peters’s elephantnose fish (Gnathonemus petersii) is a remarkable freshwater species native to the murky rivers of West and Central Africa. It is best known for its “trunk,” which is actually a highly sensitive extension of its lower jaw used to hunt for food, navigate, and communicate in dark waters.

Description

Aquarium Care
Keeping an elephantnose fish is considered advanced level due to their extreme sensitivity.

  • Tank Requirements: A minimum of 50 gallons (approx. 190 liters) is recommended for a single adult. They require a soft sand substrate; gravel can damage their delicate “trunk”.
  • Water Conditions: They need pristine water with low nitrates and a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. They are also famously used in Germany as a “living sensor” to monitor city water purity.
  • Social Life: While peaceful with other species like Congo tetras or Corydoras catfish, they are fiercely territorial with their own kind. It is best to keep them singly or in groups of five or more to spread out aggression.
  • Diet: They are primarily nocturnal scavengers and often refuse flake food, preferring frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
