Haplochromis are a sub-group of fish in lake Malawi that are of the “non-mbuna” group as are the Aulonocara and Predators. Although there are many different genus now identified, they used to all be identified under the Haplochromis genus, giving this group its name.

Scientists separated the Haplochromis genus. Today, there are 14 genus of what once was one. Their DNA, morphology and diet differentiate them from the Auloncara and Predator Sub-Group as well as the Mbuna Group

To this day, the only fish who kept the genus Haplochromis are in lake Victoria.

Haplochromis or “Haps” as they are commonly referred to, is the largest genera of Cichlids, with many species residing in Lake Malawi. Similar to Peacocks, they display wonderful color and are sexually dimorphic–males display color while females do not.
