Core Care Requirements
- Tank Size: This is the biggest hurdle. Juveniles can start in a 300-liter tank, but adults need at least 700–1,000 liters (roughly 180–260+ gallons) per fish. Some experts even recommend 200 gallons as a minimum for a single adult specimen.
- Water Conditions: They thrive in warm, tropical water—ideally 25°C to 29°C (76–86°F). They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.5–7.5).
- Filtration: Because they are large predators that produce significant waste, powerful, over-sized filtration is mandatory to keep nitrates low. Large canister filters or sump systems are typically used.
